Global Trends and Challenges: Essential Pre-Disaster Planning for Post-Disaster Resilience

Associate Professor Brett Aimers

Australia and the Asia Pacific region more broadly, is being affected by larger and beyond scale disasters and more regularly. Their consequences are more profound and lasting than ever before. As a leader in the region, Australia is well versed in and accustomed to responding to disasters and has a proud history of doing so in response to health-related disasters.

It is imperative that Australian, and international disaster management arrangements, continue to be refined and remain considerate of lessons identified and learnt. Despite this, disaster management arrangements throughout the world continue to be driven by reactive change and are not considerate of significant lessons. This presentation will explore some of the reasons for this and highlight where major reform is required.
